Gion Matsuri 2014 Ofune Boko revival

Hello !!

The biggest events of Gion Matsuri are the Yoiyama (14-16th) and the Yama Hoko Junko (17th). Yoiyama is kind of the previous parade. Each district display their Hoko or Yama floats in their districts to perform and treat the guests.
During the Gion Matsuri 32 floats are connected with neighborhoods in each district. There are 25 Yama floats which are the smaller float. They are normally carried by people on their shoulders.
There are also 7 Hoko float ( refer as Boko float as well ) which are pulled by 12 to 50 people.
In addition to the 32 Yama and Hoko floats joining the festival, there are three other floats which quietly join the festival every year. These floats are called Yasumi-yama which can't join the festival with floats for differents reasons. However in 2014, customers have a chance to see one of them called the  "Ofune-boko" after 150 years of absence.

The current Gion Festival's parade called the Saki-matsuri (former festival) is held on July 17th. The second parade called the Ato-matsuri (latter festival) used to  have the former Ofune-hoko as the last float. But this year people have the opportunity to see the Ato Matsuri with the former Ofune Hoko on July 24th.

Also many people are coming to enjoy the festival and see the parade with the traditional Yukata :)

Free market in Kyoto

Hi everyone !

did you hear about japanese market ? if you are looking for some japanese antique items, you should go to one of the most popular market in the city : Tenjin san market located in Kitano tenmangu. this is one of the two best markets in town. This market is a great excuse to visit this shrine and see people, especially school children, rubbing the two stone bulls in front of the main hall of the shrine. It will be a great chance to buy used kimono, ceramics, antiques and bric-a-brac, along with food and drink. You’ll also rub shoulders with an interesting assortment of expats and locals.

This market is held from dawn to dusk on the 25th of each month at Kitano Tenman-gū and marks the birthday (and coincidentally the death) of the Heian-era statesman Sugawara Michizane (845–903). It’s pleasant to explore the shrine before or after you do your shopping.

Rainy season in japan

Be carreful everyone the rainy season is coming soon in Japan !

In early summer, most parts of Japan get visited by a rainy season, called tsuyu  ( plum rain ) because it coincides with the season of plums ripening.
The rainy season is caused by the collision of cold northerly and warm southerly air masses, which results in a relatively bad weather front over the Japan for several weeks.
In most of Japan, the rainy season lasts from the beginning of June to mid July, while it affects the islands of Okinawa about one month earlier. Only Japan's northern most main island of Hokkaido gets barely affected by the rainy season.
Kyoto will be affected by the rainy season from 6th of June to 19th of July.

Nevertheless, the rainy season is not the most suitable season to travel in Japan,  even though it can have its advantages. For example, travel activity is rather low during June, which clears many popular outdoor attractions from the many visitors that are usually present. Also if you'd like to visit temples and shrines, the vegetation, especially the moss, is much more lush at this time :)

nowadays don't forget to bring your umbrella when you are going outside !

If you are looking for accommodation during the GW, you should book in advance in the tourist areas.
The national holidays making up the GW are :

- April 29 : Showa day ( showa no hi )

- May 3 : Constitution day ( Kenpo kinenbi )
the new postwar constitution was put on effect in 1947.

- May 4 : Greenery day ( Midori no hi )
the day is dedicated to the environment and nature, because the emperor loves  nature and plants.

- May 5 : Children's day ( kodomo no hi )

Cherry blossom season in Kyoto

Hi everyone !
In japan, " sakura " means the cherry blossom's flower. During March and April,  japan is filled with very beautiful cherry blossoms all over the country. That's the reason why many foreigners are coming to Japan during this season. The most important factor to determinate the blooming time of the cherry trees is the geographical location. Generally, the milder of the climate, the earlier the blossoms open. Typically, in early April the cherry blossom's season takes place in Kyoto, Osaka and Tokyo. Unfortunately the cherry blossom's season is relatively short. Full bloom ( mankai ) is usually reached after the opening of the first blossoms ( kaika ). The next week, the blooming peak is over and the blossoms are falling from the trees. In kyoto you have the opportunity to see many spots to enjoy the blooming of the cherry blossoms trees, like Philosopher's path or Arashiyama. Also Heian shrine or Maruyama park offer some really good scenes.
" Hanami " is the centuries old practice of picnicking under the blooming sakura. People are usually eating lunch ( Bento ) and drinking sake with a convivial atmosphere.
Sakura season is also the best moment to dress up with kimonos and walk around the city.

Thank You very much for all of customers who

chose Kyoto Kimono Rental 41 this year !
